Do I need any previous experience?
You do not need any formal previous experience however, not everyone is suitable to be a Lipspeakers. The assessors will be looking for: Good unaided hearing;
good breath control; naturally clear speech with and without voice; a good memory; a good command of English; an expressive face; no facial jewellery; no visible facial hair such as a beard, moustache or designer stubble; no visible facial piercings or other distractions; no visible tattoos; clothes which do not distract.
If you hold a Signature BSL level 1+ certificate or you can evidence previous work with deaf and deafblind people, you may be able to skip the introductory module. This can only be achieved with evidence and at the approval of the course assessor.
How will the course be delivered?
Our program will utilise a hybrid delivery model. This includes virtual teaching sessions, in-person assessments, group work, and home study. We expect that the majority of delivery will occur virtually but you will be required to attend any in-person sessions required for the course.
What will I learn?
Signature are currently updating their Level 3 Certificate in Lipspeaking however, you can see the previous curriculum on the Signature website.
How is the course assessed?
The course is made up of a number of modules followed by formal exams/assessments which meet the criteria of the awarding body, Signature. Informal assessments through the duration of the course include peer-to-peer assessments, learning videos, and self evaluation.
When will the pre-course interview/assessment take place?
Our selection/assessment day is being held on Thursday 17th April 2025. This session has limited spaces available however due to demand, we will be looking at a further date – those details are yet to be confirmed. Shortly after, you will find out if you have been accepted and a formal acceptance will be sent to you.
How much will the course cost?
We are currently waiting for the updated curriculum for this course and until we have received that, we are unable to give an exact figure however, this will be similar to previous courses we have delivered at circa £2.5k + VAT.
How long does it take to complete?
The course usually takes around 12 – 18 months to complete but there is opportunity to complete it earlier.
